CFD and FEA consulting: have the simulation done for you

Volupe sells and supports Simcenter software but does not run consulting projects. FS Dynamics, our sister company, does. It offers CFD and FEA consulting services to clients across Europe, with Stressfield in Finland and Ranold in Norway.

When it pays to hand the work over

Most Volupe customers run Simcenter with their own engineers. Some jobs are still better handed to a consultancy:

A one-off study. You need the answer once, and building the skills or buying a licence for it does not pay off.

A peak in workload. Your own analysts are busy and the project will not wait.

A coupled problem. The flow and the structure affect each other, and you need CFD and FEA in one study.

Specialist work. For example ASME Section III pipe stress and seismic qualification in nuclear plants, which FS Dynamics does.

Running it yourself

Licences

Simcenter software from Volupe, sold and supported in 28 countries.

Training

Simcenter training courses, including STAR-CCM+.

Support

Technical support from Volupe’s application specialists.

How buying Simcenter works

Fluids

CFD consulting: flow, heat and multiphase

FS Dynamics runs these projects. Its main CFD platform is Simcenter STAR-CCM+, which Volupe sells and supports, and it also works in Ansys Fluent and CFX, OpenFOAM and COMSOL when a job calls for them. Our CFD Handbook explains the method.

3D CFD

Flow, heat and multiphase

Transient, high-fidelity flow on HPC clusters, conjugate heat transfer and multiphase flows, for jobs such as EV battery cooling, underhood thermal management, combustion and propeller cavitation.

External flow

Aerodynamics and wind loads

Vehicle drag, wind loads on structures, ventilation, and hull resistance and wave loading offshore.

System level

1D system simulation

Engine systems, pipeline networks and HVAC sizing in Simcenter Amesim or GT-SUITE, with the results fed into the 3D work.

Coupled

Fluid–structure interaction

With CFD and FEA teams under one roof, the two analyses are coupled from the start rather than passed between suppliers.

Structures

FEA consulting: stress, fatigue and dynamics

FS Dynamics runs these projects in Simcenter 3D and Nastran, Abaqus, Ansys Mechanical or LS-DYNA, depending on the job. For the method itself, see our guide to finite element analysis.

Static and nonlinear

Stress and deformation

From linear static analysis to nonlinear problems with contact, large deformation and material failure, on parts such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers and piping.

Durability

Fatigue and service life

High-cycle, low-cycle and variable-amplitude fatigue, including welded joints on offshore structures.

Dynamics

NVH, impact and crash

Modal and frequency response, acoustic transfer, crash and blast, and dropped objects offshore.

Nuclear

ASME Section III and seismic

Pipe stress to ASME Section III, seismic qualification, thermal transients for start-up, shutdown and accident scenarios, and pressure-boundary fatigue.

Working with FS Dynamics

How a CFD or FEA project runs

Send what you have. Native CAD or STEP files are the quickest start, but IGES, Parasolid, existing FE meshes and 2D drawings also work.

01

Scope the question. What has to be proven, which decision the simulation supports, which load cases matter, what accuracy is needed, and the timeline.

02

Build, solve, verify. Mesh convergence, sanity checks against hand calculations, validation against test data where it exists, and an internal review before results leave the team.

03

Report with a recommendation. What the results mean for the design: what to change, and by how much.

How to engage

A finished study or an engineer in your team. A turnkey study delivered as a report, a senior consultant embedded in your team for six months, or anything in between. FS Dynamics’ consultants hold at least a Master’s degree, and many have a PhD.

Questions about CFD, FEA and simulation consulting

Contact the consultancy

Does Volupe do consulting itself?

No. Volupe sells Simcenter licences, training and support. CFD and FEA consulting projects are run by FS Dynamics and the two companies it owns, Stressfield and Ranold.

What is the difference between CFD and FEA consulting?

CFD consulting deals with fluids: flow, pressure, heat transfer and mixing. FEA consulting deals with structures: stress, deformation, fatigue and vibration. Both are branches of CAE, computer-aided engineering. Our CFD Handbook and guide to finite element analysis explain both methods.

Can one project combine CFD and FEA?

Yes. Fluid–structure interaction is one of FS Dynamics’ services, and its CFD and FEA teams work on the same model from the start. Our guide to fluid–structure interaction explains when coupling matters.

Which industries do they work in?

FS Dynamics lists automotive, energy and power generation, marine and offshore, nuclear, semiconductors and electronics, and life science. In cars that means battery and brake cooling, durability, crash and NVH; offshore, hull resistance, wave loading and subsea qualification; in energy, heat exchanger optimisation; in electronics, cleanroom airflow; in life science, medical devices and implants. Stressfield adds defence work, and Ranold oil and gas, aquaculture and water treatment.

Can we learn to run it ourselves later?

Yes. Volupe sells the Simcenter licences and runs training courses, and FS Dynamics also helps companies build their own simulation team. See how buying Simcenter works.

Do the consultancies only work in Simcenter?

FS Dynamics does not. Its main CFD platform is Simcenter STAR-CCM+, but it also works in Ansys Fluent and CFX, OpenFOAM and COMSOL. For structures it uses Simcenter 3D and Nastran, Abaqus, Ansys Mechanical and LS-DYNA. The choice depends on the job.

How long does a CFD or FEA project take?

FS Dynamics puts a single-component or simple steady-state analysis at one to two weeks, and a larger transient study or full assembly at two to three months. The timeline is agreed at the start.

Which countries do they cover?

FS Dynamics has its head office in Sweden and offices in Finland, Norway, Portugal and Germany. Stressfield works from three offices in Finland, and Ranold is based in Norway.

Tell the consultancy about your project

You deal with the consultancy directly, and FS Dynamics says it replies within 24 hours. A good first message covers:

  • what you need to simulate, and the decision it supports
  • roughly when you need the answer
  • the geometry you have and any preferred software
