What does a STAR-CCM+ licence cost? Four things decide it

We don’t publish a price list; we quote for the set-up your team needs and reply within one day. These are the four things the quote depends on.

What Simcenter STAR-CCM+ does

Licence type and term

How long you need the software and how the licence is set up; Siemens’ terms cover subscription and perpetual licences (see updates and maintenance). We go through the options with you and quote the one that fits how your team works.

Users

How many engineers need STAR-CCM+ at the same time.

Computing power

Computing power is licensed separately from the base licence. Each extra core needs a parallel licence, either an HPC licence or a Power Token; Power Session and Power on Demand remove the core count.

Add-ons

Included: a single licence unlocks the core meshing, physics and post-processing capabilities, and adjoint topology optimisation is included at no additional cost. Parameter sweeps and manual design studies in Design Manager need no extra licence.

Optional add-ons: Intelligent Design Exploration (optimisation with the SHERPA algorithm, design of experiments, adaptive sampling, and robustness and reliability studies in Design Manager), Batteries (electro-thermal modelling of battery cells and packs, including thermal runaway) and Simcenter PhysicsAI.

Computing power: Power Session, Power on Demand and Power Tokens

Siemens offers several ways to license the cores you solve on:

OptionWhat you get
HPCOne extra core per HPC licence on top of a serial session.
Power SessionOne simulation at a time on any number of CPU cores; no core count.
Power Session PlusAs Power Session, on CPU and GPU cores.
Power on DemandA block of hours for 12 months. Each run gets unlimited CPU cores and can also run on GPUs. You can run several at once, and every run’s elapsed time counts against the hours. Unused hours lapse.
Power TokensA reusable pool used alongside a base licence: one token adds one core to a run, and ten tokens give you a pre- and post-processing session. In Design Manager, each design that runs at the same time takes one token plus the parallel licences for its cores. Tokens also work in Simcenter HEEDS and return to the pool when the job ends.

Based on Siemens’ Simcenter Software Supplemental Terms.

To size this part of the quote, tell us your typical cell count, how long a run takes today and on what hardware, and roughly how many runs you expect each month.

“Apart from the performance of STAR-CCM+ I’m very happy with the support from Volupe’s team during the evaluation. Their high level of engagement and knowledge has been pivotal to help improve the validity of the simulation model.”

Updates and maintenance

Updates and access to Siemens Support Center come with maintenance. Maintenance is included in a subscription licence; a perpetual licence needs annual maintenance for them.

Support from our engineers

Support questions go to Volupe’s simulation engineers. Every customer gets a dedicated application support engineer, one of our nine, as the first point of contact, and licensing questions are prioritised. How a support case works

Downloads and licence files

Software downloads, licence files and documentation are in Siemens Support Center. We help with any installation until everything is in place.

Training

Courses are booked separately, online or in Gothenburg, from €400 per participant excl. VAT. See Simcenter STAR-CCM+ training.

How a quote works

Send us a message and we reply within one day. One of our engineers then goes through your cases, your hardware and how your team works, and you get a quote for that set-up. Other Simcenter tools are quoted the same way.

Helpful to put in your message

  • The number of users
  • The licence term
  • A typical case (physics, cell count, run time, hardware)
  • Any add-ons

How much does a Simcenter STAR-CCM+ licence cost?

Volupe does not publish a list price, because the total depends on the licence type and term, the number of users, any add-ons and how you license computing power. Tell us your typical case and hardware, and we quote for that set-up.

What do you need from me to give a quote?

The number of users, the licence term and any add-ons you want. For computing power, tell us your typical cell count, how long a run takes today and on what hardware. A short scoping call with one of our engineers usually fills in the rest.

What is the difference between Power Session and Power on Demand?

A Power Session runs one simulation at a time on any number of CPU cores, with no core count, which suits a team that runs large cases on its own cluster. Power on Demand is a block of hours for 12 months: each run gets unlimited CPU cores and can also run on GPUs, you can run several at once, and the elapsed time of every run counts against the hours. Unused hours lapse. It suits peaks and occasional large runs.

Can I see Simcenter STAR-CCM+ before I buy?

Yes. Book a demo and tell us what you need to simulate: one of our engineers shows the software on a case like yours. In the same meeting we can discuss whether a trial makes sense for your evaluation.
